Somalia: Nurse Midwife (Mogadishu)

BACKGROUND

The International Rescue Committee has been working in Somalia since 2006, providing essential services to conflict and disaster affected communities. The IRC has been operational in Central Somalia (Mudug and Galgadud regions) and Mogadishu implementing interventions in the areas of livelihood, WASH and health reaching out to more than 200,000 conflict and drought affected people.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Reportig to Facility Medical Officer, the midwife will provide care and support to women during pregnancy, labour and birth, and to women and their babies following birth (ANC/PNC) and work closely with other members of the healthcare team in the provision of care, particularly to women with complicated pregnancies.

Major Responsibilities

  • Provide medical care and treatment to obstetrical patients under supervision of the medical doctor, delivers babies and instructs patients in prenatal and postnatal health practices.
  • Stays with the patient during labor to reassure and administer medication. Performs deliveries and postpartum examinations and treatments to ensure that patient and infant are responding normally.
  • Observes universal safety and hygiene procedures during delivery to ensure adequate patient outcome. When deviations from standard are encountered during pregnancy or delivery, administers stipulated emergency measures, and arranges for immediate contact of the medical doctor.
  • Visits patients during postpartum period in health center and provides instructions in care of self and infant.
  • Screening and treatment for Sexually Transmitted Infections
  • Understand screening for HIV and prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV with antiretroviral therapy
  • Understand screening and treatment for anaemia and hookworm
  • Micronutrient supplements in pregnancy (e.g. iron, folate, vitamin A)
  • Teach women and families about danger signs in pregnancy, labour and delivery, postpartum and the newborn.
  • Help women and families make birth plans & Promote child spacing
  • Promote access to and use of skilled attendants for delivery care
  • Use partographs to monitor labour and to identify women and babies who need prompt interventions to save lives
  • Monitor foetal condition during labour by listening to the foetal heart rate and by observing the colour of the amniotic fluid, and act when there is a problem
  • Ensure that all required observations, prescribed treatment and procedures are properly carried out and documented on patient's charts or cards.
  • Examines patients during pregnancy, utilizing physical findings, laboratory test results and patient's statements to evaluate condition and ensure patient's progress is normal.
  • Maintain record of cases for inclusion in patients' files.
  • Participates in and provides training to other staff.
  • Discuss cases with the medical doctor to assure observation of specified practices and establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional and psychological support to patients and patients' relatives.
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Arrange and submit weekly work schedule and plan daily duties and responsibilities in collaboration with other nurses and medical officer in charge.
  • Attend monthly/weekly health center meetings.
  • Do health center coverage on-call as required.

Qualifications

  • Degree of midwifery from a recognized university.
  • Relevant further qualifications midwife training other relevant experience.
  • Ability and willingness to work under pressure.

Skills and Work Experience

  • 3 Years of Midwifery from recognized hospital experience
  • ANC\PAN consultation, delivery and complication cases handling experience
  • Ability to diagnose and proper treatments of suitable medication
