BACKGROUND
The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers help to people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. IRC is currently working in Somalia, supporting communities affected by disasters like drought to recover from shocks by implementing essential lifesaving and resilience projects in Galmudug and Puntland states and Banadir region.
The IRC is a member of the Building Resilient Communities in Somalia (BRCiS) Consortium and implements multi-year Resilience Programs in Somalia. BRCiS is prioritizing recovery and resilience activities that will (1) enhance opportunities for sustainable livelihoods (2) promote social cohesion, governance, and Natural Resource Management through future flooding and drought mitigation and (3) provide integrated basic health and nutrition services. Most of the communities that BRCiS is targeting are currently engaged in BRCiS resilience programming but have not yet graduated to a level of full resilience. In these communities, BRCiS is identifying priority water management infrastructure projects for FAO to rehabilitate or construct that are aligned with FAO’s objectives to maximize food production in severely flooded riverine areas and to mitigate future flooding and drought impacts.
