Name of the Project: Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture and prevention of malnutrition in Jowhar District

CEFA - European Committee for Training and Agriculture (Comitato Europeo per la Formazione e l’Agricoltura) is an Italian NGO who has worked in Somalia since 1993 transiting through, Humanitarian response interventions, livelihood support, Food Security, Infrastructure Development, Agriculture and Rural Development, during the last 30 years. In Somalia CEFA has mainly worked in Puntland and in Middle & Lower Shabelle.

Brief about the project:

The project is funded by Regione Emilia-Romagna and foresees a multi-sector integrated intervention in Jowhar District.

The general objective is to improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable categories in Hirshabelle.

The project consists of 2 components: 1) activities to increase agricultural production and strengthen livelihoods of rural households by supporting sesame production; 2) activities with the aim of strengthening the prevention of malnutrition.

The second component encloses a Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture program to address malnutrition especially among women and vulnerable youths. The objective is to prevent malnutrition by strengthening knowledge and giving access to inputs to the most vulnerable categories, namely women, youth and IDPs, malnourished or at risk of malnutrition.

Position Summary:

The nutrition expert will be responsible of developing the nutrition strategy of the project. He/She will deliver training to project staff on relevant topic, such as hygiene practices, good dietary habits, food processing and cooking demonstration. He/She will conduct a survey among the beneficiaries of the project in order to identify the dominant causes of malnutrition in the area, inappropriate dietary habits and suggest adequate solutions.

He/she will support the organization of a sensitization campaign concerning nutrition contents.

Responsibilities and duties:

  • Prepare training materials and deliver Training of Trainers (ToT) and training to project beneficiaries on nutrition promotion and education; food handling, processing and conservation; cooking demonstrations; hygiene practices to prevent illnesses and ensure food safety and any other training required.
  • Conduct a survey among project beneficiaries in order to identify the dominant causes of malnutrition in the area, inappropriate dietary habits, illnesses related to malnutrition and suggested adequate solutions.
  • Support the development of the sensitization campaign concerning nutrition contents.
  • Produce a final report containing training material and topics, overview of malnutrition causes and situation in the area of intervention, suggested strategy and solutions
  • Support the preparation of material for the draft of a publication on malnutrition condition and NSA methodology in Hirshabelle.
  • Any other activities that might be required.

Required experience:

  • Degree in Nutrition or related fields;
  • Past working experience (at least 5 years) in nutrition programs in humanitarian/development sector;
  • Knowledge of Somali context, preferably of Jowhar District;
  • Knowledge of English;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
